Nature Walks in Uganda present the most rewarding experience in the local people’s life, marvel at the people performing long ago practices like the traditional healer looking for medicinal plants, housewife kneeling by flat stones grinding millet, the blacksmith curving out machetes from shapeless iron. Uganda is endowed with beautiful forests where activities such as forest/nature walks can take place as you experience the beautiful diversity of wildlife in the thrilling walking adventures through the countryside of Uganda. Nature walks in Uganda can be used to unwind from the other activities of the day like Gorilla trekking or sitting long hours in the vehicles while on a game drive or as you transfer from one destination to another.

Nature walk in Mabira forest

Mabira Forest is the largest lake in Uganda and can be discovered via an extensive trial thus facilitating a sustainable revenue from the forest. Mabira Forest is 54 km from Kampala and 20 km from Jinja and trails the main from Jinja to Kampala road. With around 25 km bike trail that links the forest to the nearby sugar and tea plantations. Several activities are carried out in the forest and these include; Forest/nature walks, birding, cycle trails, mountain biking, or even relaxing and have a picnic lunch at the forest centre.

Nature walk in Budongo forest

Budongo Forest is the biggest forest reserve where you can walk below older mahogany and iron forest trees, it is made up Kaniyo Pabidi and Busingiro Ecotourism site are the major tourist site within Budongo Forest Reserve.  Chimpanzee tracking is the most famous activity. You can also see many forest birds including the white-thighed hornbill and puvel’s illadopsis on while on your nature walk.

Kaniyo Pabidi is a great place for hikes and nature walks and mainly chimpanzee tracking is done here. This is an area of Natural forest in the Budongo forest located about 8 km from Kichumbanyobo gate along Paraa road in Masindi offers views of the big ironwood and Mahogany trees, birds can be spotted such as the Hornbills, Chocolate backed Kingfishers among others.

Nature walk in Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth has many places where one can conduct nature walks including Kyambura gorge, Mweya peninsula, Katwe salt lake and swamp walks along Lake George. The walk along the shores of Lake George is in search of the semi-aquatic Sitatunga antelope and the elusive Shoebill. Katwe Salt Lake offers walks to experience traditional salt mining and Kyambura gorge for a variety of primates including Chimpanzees.

Nature walks in Lake Mburo National Park are the most rewarding as you can enjoy them on horseback and on foot as you walk through zebras without a fear of being attacked. The walks here also lead you to the salt lick, a place often frequented by wildlife with a viewing platform. Rubanga forest has trails that offer opportunities to enjoy the variety of birds that call the forest their home. You can also choose to explore the park on a horse and or squad bike.

Kibale Forest National Park has trails that are specifically maintained for nature walks. The forest hike or walk last anything to 3 hours or less depending on your interests and time. You are likely to sight a number of primates, mammals, several bird species found in the forest. A night nature walk is available for those in search of nocturnal animals and birds like Bush babies, Pottos, Genet cats, Civets, Bats and Owls.

The foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains offer great opportunities for nature walks that are simply breathtaking as you traverse the forested vegetation enjoying the scenery along the way including waterfalls, butterflies and amazing bird life.

Nature walks in Mt Elgon National Park

The slopes of Mount Elgon offer nature walks with rewarding views of the Karamoja plains and several communities. The walks are community guided and traverse the communities often through banana and coffee plantations, gardens, and grazing lands. You get to visit some of the several waterfalls; Sipi falls and Sisili falls in the vicinity of the park.

Nature walks in Semliki National Park

Nature walks in Semliki National Park are very rewarding with a lot birdlife, wildlife, vegetation to discover. On these walks, you will also discover the ‘male and female’ hot springs, where you are likely to encounter primate species like red-tailed monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and grey-cheeked mangabey. You will enjoy the fullness of the forest with butterflies, birds chirping away and ‘endless’ tree and shrub species. A highlight of the hike is the opportunity to cook eggs and plantains in the female hot springs.

Kidepo Valley National Park offers tremendous sights while on a nature walk as visitors can enjoy a close viewing of the wildlife including Elephants, Zebras, and Reedbuck and lots of bird species and vegetation, you will also discover the seasonal rivers around this park.
