7 Days Best of Rwanda Safari



Rwanda is a landlocked country with a green, mountainous landscape. Its famous Volcanoes National Park is home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. The park covers 4,507m-tall with Mt. Karisimbi and 4 other forested volcanoes. In the southwest is Nyungwe National Park, with an ancient montane rainforest that’s a habitat for chimpanzees and other primates.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali

Oasis Safaris representative will pick you from Kigali Airport. He will be holding Oasis Safaris’ signpost with your name. Be transferred in one of our safari vehicles designed to suit your activity with AC, wide windows to enable you to capture the surrounding. Visit the Kigali Memorial Centre; this is a grey area of the 1994 senseless massacres. The museum is built on a site where over 250,000 people are buried. The exhibits in the museum strongly tell the story of Rwanda, its history and the unfolding genocide. Included are touch screens which have on them the testimonials of some of the survivors present during this turbulent time.

Day 2: Travel to Nyungwe Forest

In the morning you will meet your driver/guide and set off towards the famous Nyungwe Forest, one of the largest forests in East and Central Africa. The forest is abundant with flora and fauna including 13 primate species from Columbus monkeys, mangabeys, blue monkeys and, of course, our cousins the chimpanzees. Nyungwe Forest is also a famous location for birders. With about 310 recorded bird species, 26 of which are endemic, this is one of the most important and still little known bird-watching destinations in Africa.

Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking

After very early morning breakfast, you will proceed to the chimpanzee trekking trail in either the Cyamudongo or Uwinka sections. The total population between the two groups is a strong 80 individuals. This exciting encounter with human’s closest relatives, you will not soon forget. After the chimp trek, you can relax at the hotel or choose an optional activity that you can discuss with your guide.

Optional activity: Canopy walk.

In the afternoon you can go for Rwanda’s only canopy walk. This walk takes place above a deep gorge cutting across the massive forest. Lasting about 2 hours, the walk takes you through some beautiful vegetation and animal habitats. En- route, you will have the chance to spot blue monkeys and unique birds that reside in the upper levels of the forest canopy. NB. Sign up for this activity with your booking.

Day 4: Transfer to Kibuye on Lake Kivu

After a relaxing breakfast, you will travel to Kibuye on the eastern shores of Lake Kivu. If time permits, you can visit the fall or take a walk around Kibuye town.  In the afternoon, get to a boat and visit a few islands.

Day 5: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park.

Today you will drive northeast to the town of Musanze close to the Virunga Volcano range. This beautiful area represents the entry to the gorilla tracking. You will retire at Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel or any other accommodation of your choice. The Hotel offers relaxing high end accommodation, with beautiful view of the rolling hills of the “Land of a thousand hills”. Accommodation comprises of 13 bedrooms-double /twin and a VIP cottage. The facility is suitable for all categories including families, couples, and friends travelling together. Each room is air conditioned featuring a flat-screen TV, a refrigerator, a fire place and a kettle. Rest to prepare yourself for Gorilla trekking the next day.

Day 6: Gorilla Trekking

Today you will start early! From the lodge, drive into the park about 20 minutes to the head Offices“Rwandais du Tourisme ET Des Parc Nationaux” (French). The head ranger will divide you into groups based on interest and fitness. From here head to the thick forest. Today you will track one of the Gorilla families. The time taken to trek the gorillas can take as little as half an hour to as much as 8 hours! Your trek will be an exciting journey along forested slopes, tangled climbers, bushes and bamboo before you finally reach the gorillas’ current location. Your attendant will point out signs of previous gorilla activity, including dung and chewed bamboo leaves. Once the gorillas have been located, you will be allowed a maximum of one hour with them. Coming face-to-face with a mountain gorilla is an awesome and emotional experience. This is a fantastic and privileged opportunity to get up close with Rwanda’s Gorillas in the Mist’.

Day 7: Transfer back to Kigali

Today after a relaxed breakfast, you will be transferred by your driver/guide back to Kigali. Depending on your departure time, you can visit the Genocide Memorial and Education Centre. Its honorable integrity to the victims, including a distressing Children’s Memorial, and a detailed description of the darkest hour in Rwanda’s recent history. Your driver/guide will take you to the airport in time for your flight home.

Note: This is only possible when your flight departs from Kigali at 3 p.m. or later. If you need another night in Kigali, we will be happy to make a booking for you.
